Statement

Inspired by the Franklin Mountain range, both as an icon for the region as well as its geological stratification, the piece consists of two sculptural “mountains” constructed out of rammed earth with locally sourced material. Layered into the striations of pigmented earth are recycled materials that have enormous impact on our environment, both in manufacturing as well as in the disposal process. Using aluminum cans from the city’s recycling program as well as shredded rubber from automotive tires, the discarded materials suggest an archaeology of our consumer culture.
