"Hands", eight feet by eight feet, is a drawing done in roofing tar on plywood. The two hands are divided by a separate panel of gold leaf. One hand is that of a man of sixty; the other is the hand of a boy of twelve. One hand invites, paradoxically turning its back to the viewer; the other refuses, with an open palm. The piece is about the signifying power of hands as well as their nature as proxies for the self.
