The fireshovel was designed to generate as much fire as possible using a handheld, dust fueled device. The sides of a snow shovel were fitted with hinged plates to increase the load capacity of dust. A propane torch was attached to the back of the shovel to ignite the dust as it was thrown in a high arc over the head.
In maximizing combustion of dense clouds of dust, the greater the quantity of burning (and flammable) material, the longer its airtime must be. Because of this, the fireshovel was most effective when demonstrated from a roof or scaffold, as shown.
