Secrets of the Nest
AMERICAN HOIST CO.
Saint Paul, MN 1997
An experiment with a large nest structure. Shredded wood was pressed into a metal basket originally used to contain the roots of a small tree. The nest was ignited with a smaller nest, then swung in circles to burn with great intensity and speed.
As with the propagation of certain animal species, the nest form is ideally suited to the propagation of fire, its bowl shape concentrating heat while providing access for fresh oxygen and exit of waste gases.
