After seeing a performance by Kazuo Ono, I tried to emulate the slow, contorted movements of the dance form he co-founded. Because ankoku butoh is the "dance of utter darkness," I chose a sub-basement setting completely devoid of light.
The piece took place in a mansion rented by the University of Wisconsin. Initially, I imagined doing "Underground" before an audience of fellow students, but the dimensions of the space were too cramped. What resulted was a series of photographs and, for me, a better idea of confinement as it relates to performance and physical limitation.
