MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The robots have landed!!! Jeff Soto brings his visions of lunar landscapes invading the California desert to OX-OP Arts. Enter the world of a SCI-FI thriller entrenched with battleground robots complete with cacti limbs and palm trees, layered with pop culture symbolism and spray paint.
For lack of a VCR, Jeff Soto began his artistic career by recreating scenes from Star Wars. Graduating from drawing and painting infamous aliens to graffiti seemed a smooth step for Soto. He was “captured by the freedom, color and defiant nature” of graffiti art which still exists in his style today; yet he has broken from its simplicity by combining layers and layers of cracking and dripping paint with images that have a surrealistic, futuristic bent.
In the spirit of graffiti, Soto has created giant installations of paintings in relation to the space given. They have been shown all the way to Stockholm, Sweden. His work has recently shown at Jesus de la Luz Gallery in Los Angeles. Soto curated “Robots Have Feelings Too,” in collaboration with the Clayton Brothers, Sunny Buick and Camille Rose Garcia. He has also exhibited in other collaborations of theirs, most recently, “Sci-Fi Westerns.” Not to mention his first appearance at OX-OP’s opening “Big Bang Group Show,” along with Chris Mars, Glenn Barr and Coop, among others.
As an illustrator, Jeff Soto has ravaged the covers of publications such as Esquire, The Village Voice, our own City Pages and Entertainment Weekly. Jeff’s telltale style has also resounded on album covers for R.L. Burnside, Fingertight, and Less Than Jake.
So Minnesotans, Beware!!! The robots are ready for invasion.
OX-OP is open to the public Tuesday through Friday 4-8pm, and Saturday 1-5pm as well as by
appointment, with new shows opening the first Saturday of every month.
