The Shoebox Gallery, in cooperation with Obsidian Arts and the Speedboat Gallery presents the “In Here” series: every Saturday in January, at 8 p.m. starting January 8th, at 2948 Chicago Av. S., buzz #08.
In contrast to the Walker’s “Out There” series, “In Here” is about local artists crossing borders, creating sited works, and affecting their surroundings (rather than being imported on the red-eye to blow minds). The Shoebox Gallery (www.mnartists.org search Shoebox Gallery), located to the right of 2948 Chicago Av. S. in Minneapolis is an 8’x8’ store front window in the Roberts Shoe store. For the past year and a half it has been host to many provocative art shows as well as the Shoebox Biennial and Performance Festival. Three artists who’ve shown at the Shoebox and Smuda Studio: Alexa Horchowski, Jenny Schmid and Emily Johnson, received Bush Fellowships last year.
What’s In Here? Saturday January 8th at 8 p.m.: The series starts with a presentation on the transformation of neighborhoods via art. Local artists Richard Amos (from the Obsidian Arts collective (www.obsidianarts.org)), Brian Kelley and Sean Smuda (curator of the Shoebox) will talk about their experiences in the Powderhorn/Phillips area. To parallel and inspire, films of the artist Tyree Guyton’s Heidelberg project (www.heildelberg.org) and his Shoe House in St. Paul will be screened, along with highlights from the Shoebox Biennial. This will fuel discussion on the gallery and neighborhood’s future. Admission is free, donations appreciated.
PLUS: In the gallery and every window in Robert’s Shoes Geoff Hammerlinck will perpetrate Pop/Sicle silkscreen abundance.
DOUBLE PLUS: In Obsidian Arts, on the 2nd floor of the Roberts Building, Richard Amos and Frank Brown’s opening: “Reparations” takes place prior to the discussion in Studio Smuda.
Dance In Here: Saturday January 15th at 8 p.m.: Colin Rusch and Kristin Van Loon will perform “Boss Move” a work created especially for the In Here series. Mr. Rusch has this to say about it: “Hot showers are an antidote to the subtle physical anxiety created by winter's cold. Being warmed to the core by steaming water invites a deep easiness in person”. As the work will incorporate the entire studio, seating is limited and this is a reservation only event.
For reservations: email email@example.com for reservations.
Music In Here: Saturday January 22nd at 8 p.m.: the Beverlin/Petersen/Seru Trio performs: Through an unusual blend of instrumentation (electric guitar and effects, Jesse Petersen; soprano saxophone, Davu Seru; percussion and found objects, Bryce Beverlin II) and a set up that makes use of the space as a whole, these three performers will attempt to cross the traditional performer/audience divide with a more all-encompassing experience. The performance, which will be entirely improvised, seeks to draw in and surround spectators while allowing them to become a crucial variable (however passive) in its outcome. $5 suggested donation.
Poetry In Here: Saturday January 29th, 8 p.m.: Speedboat Gallery crosses the river to present an evening of pyrotechnic poetry and full-blast fiction from Laura Brandenburg, Emily Carter, Paul D. Dickinson, and Frank Henry Rawlings III. All models are over 18- Not responsible for lost or stolen items.
