OX-OP ARTS PRESENTS: TRIANGULATED FIRE-PAINTINGS BY NAOTO HATTORI, RYAN KELLY & CHRIS RYNIAK
Artist Reception Saturday, February 5th, 7:00 pm – 10:00pm
Show runs Feb 5th – Mar 2nd
MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The month of February at OX-OP Arts is dedicated to Triangulated Fire -- a three-way pop-surrealist art fest featuring Naoto Hattori of Tokyo, Chris Ryniak from Cleveland, and Minneapolis’ own Ryan Kelly.
With subject matter reminiscent of a latter-day Dali with an oral fixation, Naoto Hattori’s work drips with technical precision and anatomical confusion. Born in Yokohama, Japan, Hattori graduated with honors from the School of Visual Arts in New York. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Tattoo Savage, and Global Eyes, among many others; and he has exhibited at galleries including Fuse Gallery, CBGB Gallery, Perihelion Arts, Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts, Roq la Rue Gallery and more.
Schooled in the world of graphic novels, local artist Ryan Kelly has a style that is hauntingly lovely, often featuring gorgeous renditions of knowing women in precarious circumstances. Ryan Kelly’s paintings have been featured in Juxtapoz magazine, and his work has shown in San Francisco, Portland, Milwaukee, Detroit and Minneapolis. He is also the artist on the monthly Vertigo title Lucifer with Peter Gross and Mike Carey, which was nominated for an Eisner award in three categories in 2001.
Chris Ryniak paints squids and bigfoots -- a lot. Communicating using a rich vocabulary of deliciously rendered beasties, he expresses really simple concepts and situations by painstakingly painting every single hair on the body of an albino gorilla or by holding his breath while applying the highlights on the teeth of a microscopic thingamajig. A native of Detroit, Chris transplanted himself to the clean, sunny beaches of the Cleveland shore, where he now resides with his wife, son, cat and mostly-functioning dog.
OX-OP is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 4-8pm as well as by
appointment, with new shows opening the first Saturday of every month.
