Beverlin, Petersen, Seru: In Here 1/22/05
Had a few drinks with Wendy Morris and the ABCD crew on Thursday and she asked me if I did something for every one of these. The reminder germ took hold and I realized I like to do so and in fact already had a plan. I made a giant (18 foot) megaphone bisecting the big room and feeding out the window to either listen to or announce to the street. I made it out of paper and suspended it from the ceiling with fishing line so that it appeared to float. John Hauser the natureopath and thoughtfully wistful son of a preacher-man said it looked like a midwife’s listening device. Later like for ear candling, spaceship, cornucopia. I took on the role of stage manager determining the light levels whether candles should be lit windows opened all the while writing and photographing. I knew this would affect the music and that stepping in and out of it would be beneficial. Jesse Petersen set a guitar amp in every corner of the room and produced multi-pedaled oceanic washes in 3 dimensions with sonar dings. Davu Seru roamed and muted his alto sax with calf or big toe. Bryce Beverlin II moved and spoke ritualistically. He dropped and picked up broken plates fondue skewers and a giant home-made gong sounder creating rhythm. I relate to his way of taking in and emitting information. He also did this with words at first: when I said disco wonderment, while lighting the disco ball, he said disco wonderbread. He repeated and detourned other phrases. Faster and faster the sonic informations flowed and I decided to keep up by writing and photographing in as participatory a way as possible. I brought a ten foot ladder into the room, climbed up it for shots, climbed window sills, tables, lay on the floor. This was a sparsely attended event, scads of Tsunami relief benefits and post- snow storm heebie-jeebies going on perhaps but only so many can fly to space at a given time. At a certain point an older couple came in and I thought- I bet they weren’t ready for this, but maybe they are -it was a happening.
