MINNEAPOLIS, MN-OX-OP was in on the Shag phenomenon from the start, hosting his first solo show outside of L.A. Those who attended the early shows (back then, in Grumpy’s City Club) got a crack at was to become Shag mania. Since then, even a simple book signing at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art had Shag fans lined up out the door. Fortunately, despite the fact that he is hounded by top galleries in NYC, London, Tokyo, etc., we’re lucky to have Shag loyal enough to squeeze us into what now is an insane demand/schedule.

Josh Agle (probably better known as Shag, a contraction of the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last) is a painter, illustrator and designer working in Southern California. His initial intention to establish a career as an illustrator-for-hire was sidetracked when his original paintings began to garner considerable attention from galleries and collectors. Since his first solo gallery show in 1997, Shag has had successful solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia.

The paintings themselves celebrate consumerism and consumption on vividly colored, sharply rendered panels; the characters drink, smoke and eat in lavish, stylish surroundings. But Agle sees the visuals of his work as window-dressing or stage scenery. He’s more concerned with the narrative of the art. “Most of my paintings are set in the middle of a story or situation -- characters are interacting and reacting to each other and to outside events.” Agle doesn’t offer too many clues about the stories, preferring that the viewer create his or her own narratives to fit the situations.

In 2004, MGM Studios invited Shag to redesign the Pink Panther character for its 40th anniversary. The Shag-style panther appears on DVDs and merchandise worldwide for the next three years. In 2005, Shag With A Twist, a live dance musical based on the artwork of Shag opened at the Los Angeles Theatre Center for a 13 week run. The production, sponsored by the City of LA and the San Pedro Ballet was critically acclaimed and a touring production is now being planned.

Currently Shag paints in a large studio in the hills above Southern California. He is currently working on paintings for upcoming exhibits in Los Angeles, Tokyo and Sydney.
