"TURTLESURGE," a fiber-artwork by Mary Cain, 2002. Irish wool, dyed and re-dyed, knitted shaped eccentric tapestry - 40 cm. by 137 cm.
"What art has no function? What art is without history? What art uses no materials or skills to give it form? What art has not used marks to create communication? I like process, a repetition of actions through time; and I like to consider the activity of the artist, to investigate the network of decision-making that makes up a fully realized piece. I am attracted to the physicality of the object, its tactile and textural properties. I prefer the work of the lone artist who excavates her own particular self and experience to create a work that resonates beyond that particularity. I like to think that the maker of such objects is both very ancient - connected to all those histories that have preceded us - and very new because she is the synthesizer of our past with our present and, thus, the mother of our future."
