"IRISH TAPESTRY," a fiber-artwork by Mary Cain, 2002. Irish wool, dyed and re-dyed, cotton and silk, knitted eccentric tapestry - 64 cm. by 137 cm.
"We live in a time when the public is beginning to acknowledge and desire handmade objects, a time when contemporary art in general is more directly related to our everyday lives, a time when the human condition and global responsibilities are at the forefront of public debate. In this context, I want to exploit the unique properties of textiles and expand on the traditions of this medium. I want to work with aspects of textiles to express an idea in art that has some kind of edge!"
Mary Cain
"Mary Cain provides a haunting illumination of the embellished surface of basically natural fibers. She moves colors lightly from one form to the next, providing a fiber artist's distinctive analogue to a Monet painting. In THE FOREST, and in IRISH TAPESTRY, the light animating the abstract motif is both disciplined and playful, giving a glorious pointillist feel."
