"OS SOFRIMENTOS DE FERNANDO PESSOA," a fiber-artwork by Mary Cain, 2003. "Manukau" New Zealand wool, dyed and re-dyed, knotted and knitted, with metallics. Suspension - 59 cm. by 26 cm. by 6 cm. Collection of Henrique Tigo in Amadora, Portugal.
"I explore issues of growth and change in my fiberart. Each work is just a fragmentary part of the whole. It is essential that my mind be one with the process, rather than concentrating on the piece as a final product. I am motivated by the idea of interacting with my materials and nature, creatively contributing to a moment. The spontaneous source of my creative energy is more meaningful to me than the realm of abstract ideas. My fiberworks examine the wealth of natural experience and change, but with due recognition to those aspects of the materials themselves that hold back the process."
