Recently, our community suffered a loss in the death of artist, designer and musician Matt Zaun, My name is Sean Connaughty and I am a Minneapolis based artist. Matt and I collaborated musically and artistically for 9 years. In the Winters of 2005/2006 we built five igloos and an ice amphitheatre. Loosely based on traditional Inuit snow structures, we designed the igloos as environments for recording and playing back music.
Matt and I had planned to travel to the North Shore of Lake Superior to build our latest version of the Bigloo. After Matt’s death, myself and many friends of Matt decided that It would be a fitting way to honor Matt to build the Bigloo. So in Finland, Minnesota on the snow belt of Lake Superiors North Shore we built the largest Bigloo to date. The abundance of snow and amenable temperatures were perfect and we spent ten days in the woods building and experiencing the Bigloo. The Bigloo crew included Samuel Morrison, Heidi Prevenost, Susan Stone, Stacie Engholm, Sarah Heimer, Dan Hill, Luke Aune, Brad Nelson, Ryan Murphy, Trudy Fredericks, David Pitman, Kristen Murray. We ate like Kings and Queens and biglooed like a well oiled machine! From ice to tip this Bigloo measured about 16 feet tall and could accommodate 10 people comfortably.
