BIG BANG GROUP SHOW

FEATURING 20 NEW-SCHOOL ARTISTS FROM NORTH AMERICA:
LOS ANGELES • NEW YORK • DETROIT • SAN FRANCISCO
PORTLAND • VANCOUVER • MINNEAPOLIS • ST. PAUL

Minneapolis, MN -- On March 1st, 2003, OX-OP art gallery opens its doors and kicks off its first Big Bang group show. More than just another new art gallery opening up in Minneapolis, OX-OP is at the forefront of a unique art movement. One that has quietly been shaking the foundation of the established art world with a potent brew of Low Brow, underground comix, rock posters, grafitti art, Kustom Kulture, and graphic design…with a roster of artists hailing from L.A. to New York, from the Midwest to the Far East. All broiling together to create an as-yet unnamed 21st century art movement that must be seen to be appreciated. And OX-OP is where it all comes into focus.

Although new to the gallery world, OX-OP owner/curator Tom Hazelmyer is no stranger to the movement his new gallery documents. As founder of Amphetamine Reptile Records (or AMREP, as it was affectionately monikered), the notorious 90’s indie record label, his credentials include hundreds of design projects and products from record sleeves and rock posters down to T-shirts and matchbooks as well as having written for Juxtapoz Art magazine. In 1994, he launched Flame Rite, a separate company created to put work from his favorite underground artists on custom Zippo lighters. Fast forward to 1996 and the opening of Grumpy’s Bar. From the start, Grumpy’s downtown location began to feature special one-off art shows with some of the same artists that Hazelmyer had worked with in the past. Shows with Low-Brow king-pin Coop, Shag and Frank Kozik well before their New York and L.A. blowouts. Shepard Fairy, creator of the absurdist propaganda campaign Obey Giant prior to his recent book-signings at L.A.'s Museum of Modern Art. Even a show with the founder of the U.K.'s Stuckist movement, Billy Childish.

After the success of these events, OX-OP was the next logical step. Located behind the downtown location of Grumpy’s, OX-OP will be the Twin Cities home for the breed of art that flies below mainstream gallery radar. Starting were the Grumpy’s art shows left off, and with Hazelmyer's knack for sussing out what's new and what's next, this year's artist lineup will fill the visceral void you didn't know you were missing.

OX-OP is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday 1-6pm starting March 1st, with new shows opening the first Saturday of every month.
